Bars in London have been named among the best in the world in this year’s Spirited Awards announced today as part of the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans.
Tayēr + Elementary, Lyaness at Sea Containers, Sexy Fish and 🔶🟥🔵 A Bar with Shapes for a Name were picked by panels of judges from the bar and drinks industry around the world.
Rémy Savage from 🔶🟥🔵 A Bar with Shapes for a Name (or simply Shapes) in Haggerston also won the coveted title of international bartender of the year.
Lyaness at Sea Containers London picked up two of the top awards: the overall title of world’s best bar as well as best international hotel bar.
Tayēr + Elementary in Old Street was named best international cocktail bar while Sexy Fish in Mayfair again gained the title of best international restaurant bar.
🔶🟥🔵 A Bar with Shapes for a Name, which was opened last year by Rémy Savage and Paul Lougrat, collected the award for best new international cocktail bar.
The awards, which are split into US and international categories, were announced today at a ceremony at Tales of the Cocktail’s host venue, The Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans.
They tie in with this year’s Tales of the Cocktail conference theme, “Progress”, chosen for its appreciation of the nimble and adaptive development of the drinks community over the past two-and-a-half years.
Charlotte Voisey, overall chair for the Spirited Awards, said: “The Spirited Awards celebrates excellence in our industry and this year’s winners embody that standard so well. After a difficult few years, it is truly inspiring to gather together once more and see what these recognitions really mean to everyone nominated.”
Winning bars in other parts of the world included Little Red Door in Paris with the world’s best cocktail menu, and Jack Rose Dining Saloon in Washington DC with the world’s best spirits selection.
Accolades also went to long-established bars, with Harry’s New York Bar in Paris winning the Timeless International Award and Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel in New York City winning the Timeless US Award.
Julie Reiner, co-founder of New York bars Clover Club and Leyenda as well as ready-to-drink Social Hour Cocktails and Mixtress Consulting, won the Helen David Lifetime Achievement Award.
Other global categories included best new spirit or cocktail ingredient which went to Lyre’s non-alcoholic Italian Orange, inspired by the Italian aperitivo bitter spirit and produced by non-alcoholic spirits specialist Lyre’s in Australia.
There were also accolades for media and writing, which saw The Cocktail Lovers win an award for best broadcast, podcast or online video series and The Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails, edited by David Wondrich with Noah Rothbaum, being named best new book on drinks culture, history or spirits.
