Budvar Reserve, a richer-tasting extra-matured lager from Czech brewer Budweiser Budvar, has been relaunched in the UK with a new bottle design and branding.
The premium lager is matured in the brewer’s cellars for 200 days before being bottled at 7.5% ABV, stronger than Budvar Original’s 5%. The result is a complex beer with a honeyed sweetness and rich malt body that balances the floral aroma and crisp bite of the Saaz hops.
Budweiser Budvar UK has introduced the Reserve lager in brown glass 330ml bottles that reflect the brand’s new positioning, “Greetings from the Republic of Beer”, which went live last year. The main label includes the description “Extra Matured Czech Lager”, alongside the historic roundel of the brewery’s home town, České Budějovice. The new neck label confirms it is “matured for 200 days at the National Brewery of the Czech Republic”.
Budvar brewmaster Adam Brož said: “Budvar Reserve is a special, strong, cellar-aged beer that really showcases the brewing traditions and dedication to taste and quality we’ve stayed true to at Budweiser Budvar for 125 years.
“No other brewery in the world could make this beer because it requires the very best Czech ingredients and huge amounts of time and cellaring space – making it expensive to create. But being independent and owned by the Czech people means we can brew our beer in the same way we always have, with the same focus on time and flavour.”
Budvar Reserve is initially available from this month through specialist beer retailers, including online at Flavourly and Beerhunter, with an off-trade recommended retail price of £2.25 per £330ml bottle.
The bottled version, along with a limited supply of Fresh Hopped Budvar Reserve in kegs, will be available to pubs and bars when the on-trade around the UK is able to reopen.
Jitka Vlčková, managing director of Budweiser Budvar UK, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer our unique Budvar Reserve to those discerning UK beer drinkers who enjoy stronger, premium beers on occasion. Budvar Original is the classic Czech lager for many UK beer lovers, and Budvar Reserve is another superb example of our brewers’ skill.”
Dating back to 1895, Budweiser Budvar is the national state-owned brewery of the Czech Republic, located in České Budějovice (or Budweis). Its beers are made with whole-cone Saaz hops, Moravian malts and artesian soft water from an Ice Age aquifer underneath the brewery. Small wonder it’s been described as the “last true lager in Europe”.
