Leading bartender Dré Masso has created a special cocktail to be given as a free reward for people donating to a campaign to help bars, pubs and restaurants in Soho in London.
The refreshing Soho Calling combines Beefeater Gin with Masso’s homemade hibiscus syrup, topped with soda water and garnished with a sprig of mint. It is being offered in partnership with the gin’s distributor, Pernod Ricard UK.
It will be available from Monday 7 September for free for anyone who donates to the fund-raiser, Soho Al Fresco, during September. They will be able to claim their drink when dining at any of the participating venues on Mondays to Wednesdays.
The campaign to save Soho was launched after the area’s hospitality businesses were devastated by the coronavirus shutdown and social distancing. The neighbourhood has been brought to life through al fresco dining, with 90% of businesses reopening in the pedestrianised zone.
However, it costs over £6,000 every week to cover security fees for the pedestrianisation in the area around Old Compton Street, Greek Street and Frith Street, which is currently shared by operators.
The cocktail incentive has been introduced after the end of the Government’s Eat Out To Help Out scheme which offered 50% off dining Mondays to Wednesdays throughout August.
With 25 years’ experience in bars and drinks consultancy around the world, Masso has worked in many London’s bars and restaurants, from the Atlantic Bar & Grill in Soho to Lab in Old Compton Street, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and Lonsdale House in Notting Hill.
He said: “I’ve designed this cocktail to help save Soho, which is still in trouble. I have worked in and enjoyed Soho over the years and essentially it is a ‘thank you’ cocktail if you are able to donate to the cause.”
Participating restaurants and bars include SOLA, Hoppers, Lina Stores, Ceviche, The Groucho Glub, Forty Dean Street, The French House, Zima, Rasa Sayang, Lobos, Wild Heart at Sanctum Soho, Maoz, Suvlaki, Tonkotsu, Simmons Bar and The Arts Theatre Club.
