New UK distribution for Storywood Tequila aged in scotch whisky casks

Distribution of Storywood Tequila, which is fully matured in former scotch whisky casks, is being stepped up in the UK through a new partnership with Proof Drinks.

The range features two 40% ABV expressions aged in Mexico in Speyside whisky casks, flown over from Dufftown in Scotland, plus three bottlings at cask strength. They are all made with 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the lowland region of Jalisco and married with natural spring water that flows down from the mountains from Volcán de Tequila.

Storywood Tequila Speyside 7 Reposado is aged for seven months in Speyside whisky casks and tastes of caramel, oak, vanilla and honey on an earthy agave base. It is recommended for serving neat or mixed with ginger beer or cola in a highball glass with ice and a lime wedge.

Speyside 14 Añejo is aged for over 14 months in Speyside whisky casks, giving it notes of toasted oak, roasted nuts and treacle toffee. It is recommended for drinking neat, on ice or in an Old Fashioned.

The three cask-strength tequilas are all bottled at 53% ABV. Storywood Tequila Speyside Cask Strength 7 Reposado is aged for seven months in Speyside whisky casks, producing hints of oak, vanilla and honey. It is for drinking neat, over ice or in a Tequila Sour.

The limited-edition Storywood Tequila Sherry Cask Strength 7 Reposado is aged for seven months in oloroso sherry casks, creating a tequila that is bold and full-flavoured with sweet cherry and jammy dark fruits. It can be enjoyed neat, on ice or in an Old Fashioned.

Storywood Tequila Double Oak Cask Strength 14 Añejo, also a limited edition, is aged for 14 months in both oloroso sherry casks and single malt scotch whisky barrels. It is limited to 500 cases a year and tastes of honey and caramel which balances with cherry and dark fruit notes.

Storywood Tequila was founded by Scottish chef, whisky enthusiast and wood-ageing expert Michael Ballantyne, who was inspired to create this innovative tequila while spending time in his mother’s hometown of San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato in Mexico, working alongside master distiller Luis Trejo from La Cofradia distillery.

Ballantyne said: “Our mission is to bring new flavours to tequila through oak. We work with distilleries, wineries and cooperages from around the world to hunt for the freshest casks. Our oak and flavours are what we love, but it’s the places we go and the people that we meet along the way that become our story.

“Storywood Tequila is our chapter one, with many more to come. We believe the time is right to bring our range of Storywood Tequilas to UK consumers and Proof Drinks are the perfect partners to help us achieve our ambitious goals.”

James Pattison has recently been appointed brand director for Storywood after previously working at spirits specialist Hi-Spirits with Jeremy Hill, who is now managing director of Proof Drinks.

I thought Michael’s concept of ageing Storywood Tequila in Speyside oak casks was innovative and I wanted to become involved with its journey.”

Proof Drinks, which specialises in the import, distribution, sales and marketing of premium drinks brands, also handles the fast-growing Cazcabel tequila range. Other brands in its portfolio include Compass Box whisky, Cut Rum, Aviation American Gin, Mr Black coffee liqueur, Hotel Starlino aperitifs, Agwa de Bolivia, and Rittenhouse, Elijah Craig and Evan Williams whiskeys.
