A new flavoured gin made with cornflowers and lavender has been launched by The Cotswolds Distillery, drawing inspiration from the wildflowers growing in the area.
No.1 Wildflower Gin is the first expression in the Cotswolds Wildflower Gin Collection and was developed with the gin spritz drinking occasion in mind.
Based on the recipe of the original Cotswolds Dry Gin, it is made by distilling a London Dry base, containing juniper, coriander and angelica root, and then blending in essences of orange, locally grown lavender, cornflowers and rhubarb root.
A touch of sugar has been added along with filtered water to bring the final bottling strength down to 41.7% ABV. The result is a fragrant gin described as bursting with natural flavour and delicate floral aromas of summer meadows.
It has been inspired by the wildflowers growing in the “glorious grasslands” of the Cotswolds – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The clear glass bottle has a brightly coloured label decorated with native British wildflowers.
The new flavoured gin is recommended for serving as a spritz, pouring 50ml of No.1 Wildflower Gin over ice in a copa glass and topping it up with a premium tonic and a slice of orange.
According to the distillery’s tasting notes, it has subtle floral aromas reminiscent of summer meadows with fragrant orange blossom and soft piney juniper. On the palate, it has delicate, floral notes of lavender with sweet bursts of fresh orange, leading to a refreshingly clean finish, balanced with a lingering hint of bitter-sweet marmalade.
Dan Szor, founder and CEO of Cotswolds Distillery, said: “We were inspired to create No.1 Wildflower Gin by the long, relaxing drinking occasion and this, coupled with the impressive growth in the spritz market, led us to create an exciting addition to our gin portfolio that can be enjoyed in a refreshing new way.”
It is available from this month, with bottles on sale at cotswoldsdistillery.com, at a recommended retail price of £34.95 for 70cl.
Located in Stourton in Shipston-on-Stour, The Cotswolds Distillery launched Cotswolds Dry Gin in 2014. It was named Best London Dry in the World Gin Awards and received the Top Gold Outstanding Award in the International Wine and Spirits Competition. Difford’s Guide ranked it as one of the top 20 gins available in a survey of 450 brands.
