Milroy's of Soho

Whisky specialist Milroy’s is launching a series of live tastings for people to enjoy at home as part of a new delivery service.

This weekend, the company is introducing Drams-to-your-Door, featuring 20 different selections of whiskies. With prices ranging from £15 to £130, they are aimed at both beginners and connoisseurs. Categories will include Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islands, Islay and Campbeltown in Scotland alongside Irish, American and World whiskies, with both introductory and premium selections.

There will also be three ultra-premium selections, each containing five drams. For bourbon drinkers, The Pappy Flight at £70 offers the 10, 12, 15, 20 and 23 year old expressions of the acclaimed Pappy Van Winkle while The Four Roses Special Releases Flight at £130 includes small batches from 2014 to 2019.

The Rising Sun Flight at £60 will offer a curated selection of the team’s finest Japanese whiskies such as Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve and 12 Year Old, The Nikka 12 Year Old and both the Original and Rum Cask Finished Nikka Yoichi.

With whisky tastings normally organised at its bars and shops in Soho and Spitalfields, Milroy’s will take these online with Tastings At Home from this weekend onwards. There will be six packages, accompanied by a personalised virtual tasting via conferencing app Zoom. They can be booked on the Milroy’s website at

Online tasting sessions last around one hour, during which participants will be guided through five whiskies sourced from the shop.  Whether totally new to whisky or a devoted enthusiast, you can ask questions and learn about whisky while you are tasting.

Package categories include Scotland, showcasing the varied taste profiles and styles of production from regions ranging from Speyside to Islay. The Around the World package will take in other whisky-producing countries such as India, Australia, Taiwan and Japan. American & Grain encompasses bourbon and rye whiskeys as well as newer styles such as millet whiskey.

Each category is available in both Introduction (£35 per person using whiskies at a retail price up to £50) and Premium (£60 per person using whiskies with a retail price up to £100). Packages can be purchased on the Milroy’s website for contactless delivery in advance. The Milroy’s team will follow up either by email or over the phone to book the preferred time slot.

Also available will be exclusive one-hour private conferences, between 1pm and 7pm Monday to Saturday, with the Milroy’s team of whisky professionals. They will talk participants through their existing whisky selection to ensure they are getting the most enjoyment out of them. Whether you want to get in depth about flavour, learn about the history of the distilleries or just want a friendly whisky-related chat, the experts are on hand to educate and entertain.

These conferences are £15 for members of The Dram House private members club at Milroy’s of Spitalfields or £20 for non-members.

Milroy’s of Soho opened in 1964 as The Milroys Soho Wine Market and was instrumental in the introduction of Scottish single malts to the UK market in the 1960s and 1970s. In 2014, it was bought by Martyn “Simo” Simpson who installed a whisky bar in the shop and reinstated the cellar bar, working with bar manager Chris Tanner to create The Vault cocktail bar (hidden behind a bookcase).

At the end of last year, Simo opened the four-storey Milroy’s of Spitalfields in Commercial Street, with the Whisky Bar on the ground floor (pictured above), The Proofing Room bar (pictured below) in the basement and The Dram House private members club on the top two floors.

Last week, Chris Tanner and The Proofing Room team launched a menu of bottled cocktails for no-contact delivery across the UK. Each signature serve is available for £10 for two people:

  • Nikka Highball: Nikka Whisky, Kümmel, absinthe, peach, olive and soda
  • Vodka and Cream Soda: Vodka, bison grass, fig leaf oil and Barr Cream Soda
  • Figuette: Hayman’s Small Gin (an intensely flavoured gin that contains only 0.2 units of alcohol per measure) with fig liqueur (low ABV)
  • Tequila and Habanero Fizz: Ocho Tequila Blanco, Kümmel, Fake Coconut, “F*** Trump….”, and lemon oil
  • Le Golden Highball: Bermondsey Bees Honey, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, Aberfeldy 12 Year Old whisky and birch water.

Also available are Boutique-y’s new Yuzu Collins and Pineapple Gin Mule cans (six serves for £30) and a classic choice of a 70cl bottle of Hayman’s Dry Gin and the mixer of your choice (14 serves for £30).
