New tequila brand goes live

A new range of premium tequilas, developed for the European market, is gaining a foothold in British bars as well as securing a listing in Waitrose.

Vivir Tequila targeted the on-trade at this month’s Imbibe Live show in London, presenting its line-up of a blanco, reposado and añejo, all made with 100% Blue Weber agave.

They can already be found across the country in the 15-strong group of The Alchemist bars and restaurants run by Liverpool’s Graffiti Spirits as well as in a number of top-end London members’ clubs. As previously announced, the añejo will be available in Waitrose supermarkets from September.

Introduced in the UK this spring, the brand – meaning “to live” in Spanish – was created over the past two years by food and drink entrepreneurs Paul Hayes and Navindh Grewal.

They developed the three expressions to their own specifications with a distillery in the Lowlands of Mexico’s tequila-producing region. All at 40% ABV, they have a smooth profile due to double distillation and the use of volcanic spring water.

Despite its smoothness, the blanco retains a strong agave profile to appeal to tequila enthusiasts. As well as being suitable for cocktails, it is recommended for simple serves with tonic or ginger ale over ice or for drinking neat.

The reposado has been aged for at least six months in former Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrels, giving it a sweetness with a hint of vanilla. It is recommended for drinking neat over ice.

The añejo is aged in the casks for at least 18 months – longer than many other añejo tequilas – which maintains the smoothness with extra notes of caramel and vanilla.

“They have been tailored for the European market,” Paul said. “They are smooth but they still have that agave taste and texture.”

Vivir Tequila is available from online retailers such as Master of Malt as well as suppliers Speciality Drinks and LWC.
